Approx. 76” L x 5” W / Interior Pocket 3” L x 5” W.

Pakucho Color Grown Certified Organic Cotton Yarn (Fair Trade) :

4 Hanks (Natural Pictured) & 1 Corozo Leaf Motif Button (1”)

Needle Size: #9

Gauge: 18sts. = 4” / 24 rows= 4” (Approx. due to different stitches used)

Cast on 23sts.

Work lace pattern as follows:

  1. P23 (Wrong Side)
  2. K1, P1, K1, (K2TOG, YO) 4 times, K1, (YO, SSK) 4 times, K1, P1, K1
  3. P23
  4. K1, P1, (K2TOG, YO) 4 times, K3, (YO, SSK) 4 times, P1, K1

YO= Wrap yarn over needle

SSK= Slip 1 knitwise, K1, pass slip stitch over & off the needle

Work the 4 rows until it measures 7” total. Put on a holder or smaller needle.

Then cast on 23sts. and work the Double Moss stitch as follows:

K1, P1, etc. ending with K1

  1. P1, K1, etc. ending with P1
  2. P1, K1, etc. ending with P1
  3. K1, P1, etc. ending with K1

Work the 4 rows until 2” total ending on en even row.

Note: To place a buttonhole, bind off the center 3sts. at 1” total length. Then on the next row add those 3 sts. back in the same position. (See other options under Pocket Finish)

Then take the moss piece and hold it in front of the lace piece. Put your empty right hand needle and put it into 1 stitch from each piece, basically making them one stitch while following the moss stitch at the same time. Do this for 2 more stitches from both pieces. Then slip the next 17sts. of the lace piece onto a holder. Then work the next 17sts. of the moss in pattern. Take the last 3sts. of  both pieces and work like the first 3sts. This forms the moss stitch pocket flap and the opening for the pocket. Continue with your moss pattern until 5” more (not including the 2” flap). Then change to garter stitch. Note: you can work all knit or all purl, BUT purling makes a nicer transition into the next pattern change. If you like to knit better then I will explain what to do (see note below). Work garter until 7” ending on a wrong side row. Pull the garter down for the measurement, as it will be blocked that way when done.

Purled Garter to Broken Rib & Cable Pattern

Set up pattern as follows:

(P1, K1) 4 times, P1, K1 & increase by going into the stitch below avoiding a purl stitch. Do this 4 more times making 10sts. from 5sts. for the cable. Then P1, (K1, P1) 4 times. (28sts.)

Note: If you knit all garter then end the 7” of garter on a rightside row. Cut off your yarn and reattach it on the other edge so that you will see the same row as you set up the pattern above.

  1. (WS) P8 K1 P10 K1 P8
  2. (P1, K1) 4 times, P1 K10 P1 (K1, P1) 4 times

Repeat both rows for 30 cable twists total. You will twist the cable on the 7th row first time only and then recount and twist every 10th row thereafter.

Note: this broken rib stitch has a tendency to curl which I wanted this pattern to do. If you want a flatter pattern then garter the first and the last 3 sts.

After the 30th twist work 5 more rows in pattern. Then on the next row start to garter across, BUT K2sts. together at the cable position 5 times to get back to 23sts.

Work garter for 7” total, pulled down again. Bind off semi-loosely, but neatly.

Pocket Finish

Attach a ball of yarn to the 17sts. on the holder and bind off  knitwise semi-loosely, but neatly on the right side of the pattern. On the wrong side of the pattern where the lace and moss were joined pick up 23sts. across with a smaller needle with the scarf in the upside down position. Purl the next row with a #9. Then continue with #9s and  knit the next row. Continue stockinette for 3” total. Note: you know that the stockinette is positioned correctly when you can see the purl side through the lace on the right side  of the scarf. Bind off semi-loosely, but neatly.

Weave in all the ends. Weave the pocket down with no slack.  Attach the button to the top center of the lace if you want a buttonhole closure and crochet the buttonhole to keep it from stretching out. You can have a snap closure with the button sewn to the flap. Or if you do not want a closure then sew the button on to the flap as decoration only, BUT it is nice to have a functional pocket.

Block the scarf and pull down on the garter when going over those sections.

If you wash this scarf in the washer and dryer there will be a 10% to 15% shrinkage one time only with the Pakucho organic cotton yarn. That should be average  about 6”. You might want to purchase an extra ball if you want the longer length. If you hand wash it cool and lay it out to dry there will be no shrinkage.
